Who Benefits From Botox Treatments?

Botox is FDA approved for multiple issues, but cosmetically is most famous and utilized for the vertical frown lines, also known as “11’s” between the eyes, above the nose, forehead lines and lines around the eyes called “Crow’s feet.” By relaxing the muscles in this area, in some people the lines completely disappear until the Botox wears off, usually in 3-6 months. When these lines are very deep, they will soften greatly and flatten, but probably won’t disappear completely. Starting this treatment before these lines become very deep helps prevent permanent lines. With a physician evaluation and order, other areas can be treated successfully as well, although other areas are not FDA-approved. These include lip lines, a pebbly looking chin, the bands in the neck (platysmal bands), bunny lines at the upper sides of the nose, and more. In the United States, there are two other Botulinum Toxins Type A approved for cosmetic use- Dysport and Xeomin. We offer all three products at Dignity Medical Aesthetics.

Botox is also FDA-approved for Hyperhidrosis- excessive sweating. We offer this treatment at Dignity Medical Aesthetics as well.

How to Prep for your Botox Treatment.

Bruising is the most common side effect of Botox treatments. It is important to avoid any blood thinning medications such as Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Fish oil, etc. for a week or two prior to treatment, as these greatly increase the potential for bruising. Also, any alcohol will thin the blood. It is best to avoid alcohol one week before treatment.

What to Expect During Treatment?

Botox is injected through very thin, tiny needles by our aesthetic practitioners who are licensed, trained, and medical experts in facial anatomy. During injection, we use a vibration anesthesia device (VAD). This vibration anesthesia device relieves pain by inducing stimulation-induced analgesia by distracting the brain from the sensation. Botox treatments are quick and usually completed in less than fifteen minutes. Generally, you can return to work directly after the treatment.

What to Expect After Treatment?

Occasional side effects of Botox injections include temporary swelling or firmness at the injection site, slight pain, and redness. Generally, these fade quickly, usually within an hour. Very rare side effects include nausea, muscle weakness, flu like symptoms, drooping of an eyelid/eyebrow or a headache. Botox begins taking effect within 24 hours but is often not completely noticeable for 7-10 days.

For our first-time patients, we prefer that you return for a two-week follow-up appointment so we can assess whether we achieved the maximum desired outcome possible. This also helps establish correct dosing for future appointments. Many offices do not offer a no fee follow up appointment, but we have found this process leads to excellent patient satisfaction and loyalty. We do not charge an appointment fee for the follow up, but if more units are recommended, there is a per unit fee for additional units.

Duration

For beginners having the area between the eyes treated, if complete relaxation is achieved, most patients will see a three-month duration. If the treatment is repeated every three months for one year, by the second year, a four- to five-month duration is typical. Continue at this pace, and by year three, a six to eight-month duration may be achieved. Most importantly, keeping the lines from returning prevents them from deepening. If for any reason you decide to discontinue treatment, you will return to full movement in a few months. There will not be a worsening of lines should you decide to stop, just a return to your starting point prior to treatment.
